This Senior Quantity Surveyor Quantum Associate job is a specialist construction disputes job that is ideal for a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor looking to transfer from build or civil engineering contracting or PQS/cost consultancy work. 

You will be trained to specialise in the area of premium construction dispute work, and to work on high value international arbitrations.

This Senior Quantity Surveyor Quantum Associate job would also suit a QS that has recently transferred into claims or quantum related disputes work but who hasn’t settled and isn’t happy with their training, scope of responsibilities or the calibre of the employer they are with.

The Senior Quantity Surveyor Quantum Associate will work as part of a close-knit team alongside industry-leading Who’s Who Legal named experts, on a number of major international disputes.

Responsibilities and Duties

This is an entry-level quantum construction disputes role for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to work on premium long-term international arbitration work.

Your primary function will be to provide high-level analytical support to one of the businesses experts on multiple disputes concurrently.

The successful Quantity Surveying candidate will be given additional responsibilities as they gain experience and training within the role, and will take independent responsibility for drafting specific quantum related sections of expert reports, including carrying out all of the analysis and drafting of the relevant report sections.

Your duties will include meeting with solicitors to discuss the project, methods and scope of analysis that are required and you will have the opportunity to start building your network and reputation in this important arena.

Some of the Senior Quantity Surveyor Quantum Associate job duties will include:

• Assisting with the early-stage research, analysis and drafting of detailed and accurate reports including the cost and claims situation on major disputes.
• Working in a supporting role to assist colleagues and the Quantum Expert Witness to provide highly analytical expert opinions for expert reports and joint statements for formal dispute resolution proceedings.
• Providing support to colleagues providing submissions to the International Court of Arbitration (ICC), including analysing implemented changed design and increased costs.
• Assist with the meticulous review of contemporaneous data to analyse the dispute variables
• Under guidance from your manager and other colleagues, assist the Quantum Expert Witness to conduct Quantum analysis in an ICC Arbitration representing the claimant regarding major international infrastructure projects.
• Liaise with a variety of parties both internally and externally to generate required information and documentation.
• Assisting colleagues with the preparations for testifying experts and legal counsel with presentations and cross-examination reports.

Desired Skills and Experience

Suitable Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor candidates will need to demonstrate strong QS experience and a commitment to move into the construction dispute and arbitration space.  This would include:

• Possessing around 3-6 years of premium Quantity Surveying experience, ideally with a major reputable employer and with experience on large-scale, complex projects.
• Demonstrate a good contractual knowledge and an ability to know their way around the detail and principles of standard forms of construction contracts.
• A basic knowledge of and interest in dispute resolution procedures.
• A demonstrable ability to approach tasks methodically and analytically.
• Be incredibly meticulous and thorough in the work that you have done and be able to show examples of high standard written work completed
• Demonstrate a personable and professional manner.
• Able to show a genuine passion to specialise and progress your career in construction claims and disputes.
• Possess a high standard of written and spoken English

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

• A Degree in Quantity Surveying / Commercial Management or a related construction degree or comparable qualification is expected.
• Chartered, or working towards Chartership (MRICS / MInstCES / equivalent) is highly desirable
• To have or be working towards an MSc or LLM in Construction Law would be advantageous (although training and sponsorship of such qualifications can be provided to the right candidate)
• In addition, c3-5 years’ experience of working as a Quantity Surveyor / PQS / Cost Manager with a premium UK or international civil engineering or building construction contractor is expected
