Why does ICWCI Membership matter for Clerk of Works candidates?

What changed last year?

In May 2025, ICWCI changed what used to be known as Licentiate (LICWCI) to Associate Member (Assoc. ICWCI) grade. Licentiate is no longer available to new applicants, but of course it very much remains an active grade for people who achieved it before May 2025. The new Associate Member (Assoc. ICWCI) grade is now the main step on the membership route for professionals who are heading for full corporate membership.

Experience can be just as important as formal qualifications. ICWCI recognises that many excellent Clerks of Works have progressed through the trades or site management rather than university, which is why there are experience-based routes to both Associate Member and Member status. 

Associate Membership: Is this really a useful step for me to help me develop as a candidate?

Associate Membership can be particularly useful if you are developing your career in inspection or moving towards Clerk of Works roles. It can help show employers that you are taking your inspection career seriously, even whilst still working towards full member status. It is also a practical option if you are moving from site management, trade or quality roles into more formal Clerk of Works positions. 

Full Membership: professional recognition for experienced inspectors

Full ICWCI Member status, usually shown as MICWCI, is aimed at more experienced professionals.

This can be valuable if you already have strong Clerk of Works, inspection or quality assurance experience and want formal recognition of your professional competence.

ICWCI has stated that the MICWCI Member designation was benchmarked by Ecctis in 2021 as comparable to RQF Level 6.

How can ICWCI Membership help my career?

ICWCI membership is not always essential, but it is a positive differentiator.

Is ICWCI Membership essential?

But remember that you may be applying alongside other candidates who have similar product knowledge and good references but also have the ICWCI membership.
