So we spoke to Keith Keown who started his quantity surveying career some years ago. Keith got his degree in this subject and went on to work with various construction organisation in the UK and internationally.

The construction contract is a legal agreement between the owner and the contractor based on certain policies and conditions recorded in documentation form. The construction contract defines the contractor's scope of work and compensation, and also establishes the responsibilities, liabilities, and warranties of both the contractor and the owner....

As of May 2015 I will have completed my first full year with Maxim Recruitment. I've been mainly recruiting Quantity Surveyors, Claims professionals, and Planning staff in the busy U.K construction market. Time has flown by, and this can largely be attributed to the fact it's been a busy, successful, and enjoyable year!

The Dubai construction market got some positive news this month when the eagerly anticipated extension to the Dubai Metro Red Line, dubbed 'Route 2020' was officially approved. The Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, instructed the Roads and Transport Agency (RTA) to begin work immediately on Route 2020.

Hong Kong Stadium is the main sports venue in Hong Kong. The stadium was redeveloped from the old Government Stadium and reopened in 1994. The stadium has a maximum seating capacity of 40,000 and regularly hosts international football matches and other large sporting events such as the ever popular Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament. But now there are plans to develop an even larger state of the art Sports stadium and complex in Hong Kong, Kai Tak Sports Stadium.

The ‘Museum of the Future’, a title that would befit Dubai itself, was announced in fittingly contemporary fashion by his highness, via his official Twitter account. Following a string of tweets he concluded that the ‘Museum of the Future is a first step of many to come, marking the beginning of great achievements.’ The Museum’s function is to showcase the world’s latest inventions, with workshops and courses also running, acting as a stage for the most promising inventors and entrepreneurs.

Hong Kong, as an international financial city, never stops developing its economy system to increase its competitiveness in the world. However, when we focus too munch on the financial world sometimes our culture and traditional history can be overlooked. In order to boost cultural and entertainment establishments in Hong Kong, a project called West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) is proposed and currently under development.

Apprenticeship and graduate schemes are on the up. All of the large international construction corporations offer ‘get paid to learn’ schemes of one kind or another. Many offer several tiers from initial school leaver programs to intermediate and higher level schemes leading to professional qualifications. Most of the programs include some study with a local college or university. And many of the companies also offer help for those at the higher levels to obtain qualifications that will be recognised by professional bodies.

UK construction can brag some exciting projects in the current market, such as Crossrail, HS2, the Northern Line Extension, the plans for new residential towers in London, and the renewal of a variety of frameworks such as the beginning of AMP 6 that consists of various new build treatment plants and is of course the massive Thames Tideway Tunnel project. Here is a brief round up of some of the most exciting construction projects and frameworks within civil engineering/infrastructure and within building construction.

Claims on major construction and engineering projects appear to be inevitable, no matter where in the world the projects are being built. There are many reasons that could generate claims: it may because of the contract documents that contain errors and omissions, code violations, or a lack of inter-discipline coordination, or failure of one or many parties to perform in a timely manner, thereby delaying the other party; or changes in the work/design unilaterally imposed by the owner onto the contractor; or unforeseen conditions, such as abnormal or unusual weather or ground conditions. Claims may occur in between the contractors and the employers, the key parties of a construction project.

The special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau are served by international airports which are both due for expansion in the coming years. With rapid growth in air traffic passengers expected within the region the new expansion projects are needed to ensure the airports can cope with expected increase in international flights and passenger numbers. These large scale construction projects will create thousands of new jobs for construction professionals and will help further strengthen the construction market outlook in Hong Kong.

The price of crude oil has dropped by more than half in the last 6 months. For those of us filling up our cars in the UK, this is music to our ears. However to the construction industry in the Middle East, this has potentially damaging effects. You may not read it in the Middle Eastern press too much but there has been growing concern about the decline in oil prices and the knock on effect this would have on planned construction work in the Middle East region.
