Lead Estimator needed for a major new railway transit infrastructure project in Toronto
Responsibilities and Duties
- Managing the cost estimating and pricing of projects with the use of a construction schedule and constructability plan.
- Advising clients on budgets
- Working as an integral part of a team comprising cost consultants, design engineers, planners and project managers supporting major projects and their design delivery
- Undertaking live client interface responsibilities at a management level
- Take a lead with understanding, identifying and evaluating project risks for inclusion in the project budget
- Review tender documents, geotechnical reports and construction drawings and be able to predict future project duration to establish robust project budgets
- Ideally be proficient with the construction industry pricing software used in Canada for infrastructure projects
- Able to manage external design team consultants
- Able to understand and support the bidding process for new work
Desired Skills and Experience
- Suitable candidates will have had between 6 years and 10 or more years of good quality estimating experience, although all applications are judged on merit.
- The preference is for estimating experience that has been gained from civil infrastructure/transportation/highway projects in Canada, the UK or similar types of construction environments.
- Experience gained within either or both construction consulting and contracting is desired, ideally on large civil engineering infrastructure projects
- Experience of advising clients on designs, budget implications and managing cost control systems at a strategic / management level is expected
- Experience of working in Canada or internationally on civil engineering infrastructure, major building or rail / transit projects is expected
- Commercial management experience and awareness would be beneficial
- Client interface experience at a managerial level is important
- Experience of working in a team environment with the confidence to self-manage on a daily basis and able to take a lead in managing others and reporting team progress to your divisional manager or senior management.
- Demonstrable understanding of identifying, managing and evaluating project risks is essential.
- Hands on experience of using Estimating software is essential
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- A professional qualification in construction is highly desirable although hands on cost estimating and commercial management experience is most critical.
- Canadian Citizenship or the current right to work in Canada is desirable although visas can be obtained for strong candidates with good international experience on major projects
