A Senior Estimator is urgently needed to join a growing construction engineering consultancy team based in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland area.

Your job duties will be to prepare estimates on major highway, bridge, transportation, rail and transit projects ranging in size from $20m to multi-Billion dollar major projects.

Project Details

As Senior Estimator, you will support the Estimating team on the large projects, and work independently on your own estimating work on small and medium-sized projects.

You will work closely with your colleagues in the estimating team and will also provide cost and estimating support to the other business units.

Estimating experience is required and you will be ambitious and looking for fast track training and development.

Suitable Senior Estimating candidates will be based in Vancouver / the Lower Mainland and will balance working from home and working in the downtown Vancouver office as required; probably for 2-4 days a week.

This exciting and varied Senior Estimator job role will include in-depth estimating, tendering and risk evaluation work on a range of civil engineering infrastructure and rail and transit projects to be constructed in Canada.

Responsibilities and Duties

This exciting Senior Estimator job will have the following core duties; training can be provided in some areas if not all duties have previously been undertaken in full at a Senior Estimator level:

  • Managing the cost estimating and pricing of projects from the ground up using Labour, Equipment and Materials supported by a construction schedule and constructability plan.
  • Advising clients on budgets and helping them to manage their cost management systems.
  • Working as an integral part of a team comprising designers, planners and specialist advisors.
  • Undertaking commercial management duties
  • Undertaking live client interface responsibilities at a management level
  • Take a lead with understanding, identifying and evaluating project risks for inclusion in the project budget
  • Manage the costing of projects from drawings at different stages of design from preliminary through conceptual to IFC drawings, using real world construction experience rather than a purely theoretical approach
  • Review tender documents, geotechnical reports and construction drawings and be able to predict future project duration to establish robust project budgets
  • Be proficient with HSS, HeavyBid, Bid2Win and/or other comparable construction industry pricing software used in Canada for infrastructure projects
  • The Senior Estimator job role requires an ambitious, proactive and cerebral candidate that is seeking to make an impact on the outcome of projects from their first concept through design, procurement and construction.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • It is expected that suitable candidates will have had between 6 years and 10 or more years of good quality estimating experience, although all applications are judged on merit.
  • The preference is for estimating experience that has been gained from civil infrastructure/transportation/highway projects in British Columbia or within Canada.  Rail and trackwork and/or electrical systems projects or transferrable experience from power, oil & gas or major building projects will also be considered
  • Experience gained within construction contracting is preferred, ideally on projects of between $20m-$200m + in value.
  • Senior Estimators with Cost Consulting/PQS estimating experience will also be of interest when candidates also understand issues relating to buildability
  • Experience of advising clients on budgets and managing cost control systems at a strategic / management level is expected
  • Experience of working in Canada on civil engineering infrastructure, major building or rail / transit projects is preferred although good quality international experience is also acceptable (ideally with the right to work in Canada although this is not essential)
  • Commercial management experience would be beneficial
  • Client interface experience at a managerial level is important
  • Experience of working in a team environment with the confidence to self-manage on a daily basis and able to take a lead in managing others and reporting team progress to your divisional manager or senior management.
  • Demonstrable understanding of identifying, managing and evaluating project risks is essential.
  • Hands on experience of using HSS, HeavyBid, Bid2Win or other comparable construction sector pricing software is desirable
  • Previous construction project estimating experience needs to demonstrate most / many of the above capabilities and Senior Estimator candidates should be able to evidence a proactive and innovative approach to the estimating and project costing process.
  • A demonstrable passion for excellence in Estimating is needed, along with the professional desire to ensure that cost systems are set up appropriately to be able to allow risk and cost to be managed throughout the construction process to successful project completion.

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • A professional qualification in construction is highly desirable although hands on cost estimating and commercial management experience is most critical.
  • Canadian Citizenship or the current right to work in Canada is desired; strong candidates requiring a work visa may be considered on merit
  • Current /recent experience of undertaking Estimating work at this level in the Vancouver / British Columbia construction industry, ideally on civil engineering infrastructure projects is highly desirable
