A fantastic Senior Clerk of Works job is available in the Swindon area with a well-established construction consultancy. The job will be working from home with construction site visits in the West London area between Bath and Bristol, Swindon and Cheltenham.
Project Details
The role will primarily involve inspecting residential new-build and refurbishment projects. This may include new build housing, apartment schemes, refurbishment works and mixed-use developments. You will monitor construction quality and progress, identify defects and ensure work complies with contractual drawings, employer’s requirements, warranty standards and Building Regulations.
Responsibilities and Duties
This Clerk of Works job is based from home in the Swindon area and will involve regular regional travel (of up to 1 hour in any direction) to inspect construction quality and ensure compliance across the active building construction sites in the region.
Suitable applicants should be based in or around Swindon, or within a commutable location that allows reliable access to sites about an hour away in and between Bristol, Bath and Cheltenham.
- Undertake regular inspections of construction projects.
- Monitor project progress and the quality of construction work.
- Prepare timely, professional reports supported by clear photographic evidence.
- Verify compliance with contractual drawings, employer’s requirements, warranty-provider standards and Building Regulations.
- Identify and report defects, discrepancies and areas of non-compliance.
- Take ownership of defect trackers within site visit reports.
- Proactively obtain updates from site teams and ensure records remain accurate.
- Organise and undertake snagging, de-snagging and end-of-defects-liability-period inspections.
- Liaise professionally with contractors, consultants, developers, client teams and private sector contractor representatives.
- Maintain project records in accordance with company filing systems and quality-assurance processes.
- Attend site meetings and contribute to quality assurance and compliance processes.
- Support and develop junior colleagues.
Desired Skills and Experience
The ideal Clerk of Works will have a strong construction background and previous experience inspecting residential developments in the UK. Experience across broader building projects, such as commercial, healthcare, education or contractor-led schemes, would also be highly beneficial.

- Previous experience as a Clerk of Works, Site Inspector, Quality Inspector, Building Inspector or Site Manager.
- Good understanding of residential construction methods, workmanship standards and UK building regulations.
- Experience in inspecting new build housing, residential refurbishment, apartments or mixed-use construction projects.
- Wider project experience in commercial buildings, healthcare, schools, universities or contractor-led construction projects would be advantageous.
- Ability to manage inspections across multiple sites and plan travel efficiently.
- Strong written reporting skills and the ability to produce clear photographic inspection records.
- Confident communication skills when liaising with contractors, consultants, clients and contractor teams.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel regionally as required.
- Excellent knowledge of building construction processes.
- Good understanding of standard construction contracts, including JCT and NEC.
- Experience using tablet-based inspection software such as Field View or PlanRadar.
- Strong observational skills and the ability to identify defects and discrepancies.
- Excellent written English, including professional and technically accurate reporting.
- Good interpersonal and client-facing skills.
- Ability to research new construction techniques and products.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and Project.
- Strong organisation, time management and deadline-management skills.
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- Membership of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate or the Chartered Institute of Building - ICWCI qualification, such as MICWCI or LICWCI, preferred.
- CIOB, RICS, CABE or similar professional membership considered.
- Construction-related qualification desirable.
- Full UK driving licence.
