A Quantity Surveyor is required to join a busy construction contractor based in Sevenoaks, Kent.

This QS job offers the opportunity to become the first dedicated Quantity Surveyor hire and take ownership of commercial management across refurbishment, conversion and new build projects up to £15m.

Project Details

The successful Quantity Surveyor will work on a range of construction projects including office to residential conversions, high-end refurbishments, residential developments and new build schemes.

Projects are typically valued up to £15m and will require strong commercial control to help ensure works are delivered on time, within budget and in accordance with agreed contract terms.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Quantity Surveyor will be responsible for running much of the day-to-day subcontractor management side of the business.

This is an important appointment for the company and will suit a QS who is comfortable taking ownership, building processes and working closely with directors, site teams and the finance function.

  • Manage commercial matters across live construction projects
  • Prepare and manage valuations, payment applications and payment notices
  • Manage subcontractor accounts, including orders, variations, notices and final accounts
  • Administer JCT contracts and support the business with contractual compliance
  • Preparation and submission of loss & expense / EOT cost claims
  • Work closely with the Commercial Director, senior management and site teams
  • Review project costs, budgets and commercial performance
  • Support procurement of subcontractors and suppliers where required
  • Assess and agree variations, change control and related commercial documentation
  • Liaise with finance to support accurate cost reporting and cashflow management
  • Attend project and commercial meetings as required
  • Help introduce and improve commercial systems, procedures and reporting
  • Support the business in maintaining strong relationships with clients, subcontractors and supply chain partners

Desired Skills and Experience

This Quantity Surveyor vacancy will suit a candidate subcontractor or main contractor experience who can work independently while also contributing to a collaborative team environment.

A practical understanding of building construction, refurbishment and residential development would be highly beneficial.

  • Previous experience working as a Quantity Surveyor or Project Quantity Surveyor
  • Good working knowledge of JCT contracts
  • Experience managing subcontractor payments, notices, orders and variations
  • Main contractor or subcontractor background will be considered
  • Experience on refurbishment, conversion, residential or new build construction projects
  • Ability to manage the commercial side of projects with limited supervision
  • Strong communication skills and confidence dealing with directors, site teams and subcontractors
  • Organised, commercially aware and comfortable working in a growing business
  • Able to work from the office, site and home when required
  • Willingness to learn, improve processes and grow with the company
  • Experience on projects up to around £15m would be advantageous

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • A degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related construction discipline is preferred although not essential.
  • Relevant Quantity Surveyor experience will be considered in place of a degree
  • Strong practical JCT contract knowledge is required
