The Newest Light Rail Project in Canada

Posted by Steve Thomas on Friday, September 13, 2019

Light rapid transit (or LRT) projects are one of the most prolific infrastructure projects in Ontario. This is particularly true in Southern Ontario, where the large – and growing – population of the region relies heavily on light rail. One of the newest LRT projects about to start design and construction in the region is the Hurontario LRT. It will travel from Brampton, on the north-west outskirts of Toronto, to Port Credit on the shores of Lake Ontario. Here’s a little more about this exciting rail project and what it means for construction jobs in Ontario.

Hurontario LRT Job Prospects

The CAD$1.4 billion project includes 19 new stops, two connections to existing LRT lines and two intermodal LRT stops, so there is plenty for rail systems engineers to get their teeth into on this project. The new line crosses several major highways in the region, including the 401, 403, 407 and QEW, and a new LRT-only flyover will be constructed over the 403. There is also a new maintenance and storage facility for the LRT vehicles to be built as part of this project. With the project due to start imminently, expect to see demand rise for civil engineers, project managers, quantity surveyors and construction site managers. Currently, the expected completion date is 2022, though this will be finalised when the winning bidder is confirmed.

Hurontario LRT Reception

As the new line will create a transport grid across the Peel Region, it is an extremely important project for the area. Described as a long-awaited venture, preparatory works have been underway for two years, though the director of Missisauga’s LRT project office noted that businesses and residents have been anticipating this line for a decade. Metrolinx has been actively promoting the Hurontario LRT project in the community, even going so far as to showcase a full-scale replica of the new Alstom LRT vehicle that will use the line. The public also recently had the opportunity to question the senior leaders of the project about the future plans, demonstrating the significance of the project and Metrolinx’s eagerness to get it right first time.

Continued Focus on Rail Projects

The Hurontario LRT project is just one of many rail infrastructure projects in Ontario. There are a wide range of public transit and transportation projects planned – including new build works, rail electrification projects, and existing LRT extensions and upgrades – as part of the Investing in Canada plan. This report sets out CAD$25 billion of investment in Canadian rail projects until 2027, making Canada the perfect place for rail systems engineers, rail electrification engineers, and signalling engineers. With rail projects underway in many provinces, rail systems engineers are spoilt for choice when looking for rail jobs in Canada.
