The Maxim recruitment blog takes a two part look at the flourishing construction sector in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar. Last time we looked at air and sea. This time, we examine the growing rail and road networks.

Like the rest of the GCC, Qatar has a non existent rail infrastructure, but the Government has recognised this need and has begun developing plans for the ‘Doha Metro Network’. The Metro would span 85km and cost a predicted total of $4.65 Billion. The five sections that will be mostly underground are the first phase of a long term three phase plan that has a predicted 2026 completion date. The Doha Metro Network is part of a much wider plan to integrate the Gulf States through one railway system, which if fully developed and ultimately approved could span as far as Istanbul and Muscat. These envisaged ideas would bring Qatar to the forefront of the Middle East and show the rest of the world what they can offer.

The main transport sector to be feeling the constraints of a growing population is that of the roads network. It is the most popular means of transporting freight and passengers across the country. The government has approved plans to spend up to $20 Billion on road developments and construction in the coming years to aid the growing population and Qatar’s economical growth. The three most impressive road developments are; the three billion dollar Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Causeway that has a predicted completion date of 2013, the 130 km highway named the North Road which links Doha to Al Khor and Al Ruwais, Zubarah and finally the bridge to Bahrain and finally the Doha Expressway, which is currently under construction.

Qatar, at present and in what would seem many years to come is a hot bed of transport infrastructure construction and offers many intriguing and prestigious projects for UK Expatriates in the construction and more specifically transport sector to work in the Middle East.
