Posted by Natasha Bailey on Friday, February 28, 2014
I have been keeping a close eye on key players and projects in Dubai, Abu Dhabi & Qatar and have prepared a snapshot of activity from this month in the Middle East Market. If February is anything to go by, this year will be plentiful in terms of new projects being awarded and should offer anyone wanting to make a sensible career move some excellent opportunities.
Abu Dhabi:
Building
Construction is to begin this month on a $180m five star Hotel in Abu Dhabi’s Corniche. The project has been awarded to a JV of reputable companies and will be the first hotel branded experience in the region. It will include signature restaurants, entertainment and meeting facilities, the renowned Hard Rock Cafe as well as 378 rooms. This project is to be completed between November 2016 and Q1 of 2017.
Airport
The new Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) has seen further packages awarded on the project of late. The mechanical engineering services and the MEP packages have both now been awarded for this prestigious project.
The value of the mechanical engineering package is $95.4m whilst the MEP package is estimated to be worth approximately $239m and will be carried out by a Joint Venture partnership.
The development of the MTB will see the new terminal building accommodating an expected 30 million passengers per year, 65 Aircraft, 8,500 passengers departing and arriving per hour. The planned opening for the MTB is in 2017.
Qatar:
Stadia
The Qatar Supreme Committee, who is responsible for delivering the 2022 World Cup have now announced that they have appointed both a Project Management company as well as a Design Consultant for the construction of the Al Rayyan Stadium. The awards have both gone to market leading global construction companies and both will be supervised by the overall programme management consultant for World Cup work.
The 45,000 capacity stadium will encompass a natural grass pitch cooled by green technologies and will be an open-air stadium. It’s most iconic feature is currently designed to be its spectacular 420,00 sq ft digital media external façade which will give the stadium a futuristic look.
Dubai:

Dubai developer Nakheel has awarded a $102m contract to build The Pointe at Palm Jumeirah. Scheduled for completion in 2016 this retail and entertainment development will be located adjacent to Atlantis. The Pointe is one of several new developments underway at Palm Jumeirah.
