Highlights of my unforgettable trip to Hong Kong

I have recently returned from spending an unforgettable week in Hong Kong. There, my colleague Steve Thomas and I were on a Recruitment mission to connect with candidates with a potential interest in relocating to work in the UK or Canada. It was great to meet and network with candidates based in Hong Kong and I also had some personal time to explore the international metropolis of Hong Kong!
In the evening, we attended The Lighthouse Hong Kong 2023 annual ball. The theme of this year was ‘Silver Soiree’. It was lovely to see so many beautifully dressed attendees. It was a great evening of fun, with delicious food and entertainment. A magician worked the room and I was lucky enough for him to perform an impressive trick right in front of me! Maxim’s Recruitment Director Richard Poulter did an amazing job of leading with the organising and hosting of the ball.
I feel like a lot of people (including me before visiting Hong Kong) have a misconception that Hong Kong is strictly urban, with a skyline dominated by skyscrapers and modern infrastructure. But, in truth, the nature of Hong Kong is stunning and diverse, with mountains, beaches, hiking trails and even botanic gardens that can be found inside the city.
On my 2nd full day in Hong Kong (a Sunday of course!) I had had a pleasure of visiting Tian Tan Big Buddha on Lantau Island, which is one of Hong Kong’s most popular tourist attractions. Lantau Island is the largest Island in Hong Kong surrounded by beautiful scenery. I took many pictures of the spectacular landscapes and really enjoyed spending some time outside the city surrounded by the mountains, nature and culture. A part of my day trip also included a visit to the famous Tai O fishing village. It was interesting to get to experience the traditional way of life of the fishermen living there in the stilt houses above the water.
I also had the chance of having a delicious seafood lunch on an outlying Hong Kong Island called Lamma Island. The Maxim Recruitment team took a scenic 30-minute ferry ride from Hong Kong ferry pier to get there. Lamma Island is known for its seafood restaurants and relaxed atmosphere. Exploring Lamma Island was the perfect way to unwind from the busy Hong Kong city life.
Hong Kong is fairly easy to navigate once you get used to your surroundings. I used MTR extensively to get around the city and it was very convenient and inexpensive.
The food scene in Hong Kong is extraordinary and diverse. There is so much great food to be discovered here, with something for everyone to enjoy. I never got tired of the tasty Chinese food, and I have got to say that the Chinese food that I have tried in Hong Kong was the best I have ever eaten! My personal favourite was dim sum, which is a must-try for any visitor to Hong Kong.
I would highly recommend visiting Hong Kong to anyone, and it is a super exciting destination with so much to do! I found the people of Hong Kong to be very welcoming, friendly and helpful which made my trip that extra bit special. Whether you are seeking to explore nature, culinary adventures, shopping or amazing nightlife, Hong Kong has it all. It is a great place to visit, as well as to live and work in and I can honestly say that it is hard for other big cities that I have visited to compete with the unique attraction of Hong Kong.
