Crossrail Nears Completion

Posted by Steve Thomas on Thursday, November 23, 2017

Now at 87% completion, Crossrail is entering the final phases of their programme.  However, there is still plenty of work to be completed over the next year before Elizabeth line services open in December 2018, creating opportunities for rail, infrastructure, and construction staff.

Railway Track Nears Completion

The last section of track was laid in September 2017, completing the 50km line. Installation of railway systems is underway before power is switched on in the tunnels for testing to begin, currently planned for the end of 2017. With such a long line to fit out and test ahead of the public opening, engineers are required in areas such as tunnel ventilation, power, signalling, communications, and overhead line equipment.

Communications Under Control

The first line route control centre is open; however, the twenty station and railway control rooms are still being fitted out. These stations will manage the real-time delivery of train services, incident responses, and scheduling train services and works on the line. CCTV, public address systems, information displays, radio systems and data networks will all be required to be installed and tested. If you are a communications or controls engineer, signalling systems engineer, or infrastructure engineer wanting to work on Crossrail, this could be your chance to get involved.

Crossrail Stations Progressing Well

With nine stations still under construction in various stages, there are still plenty of opportunities for construction staff.  The Liverpool Street station canopy entrance has just been completed, while Bond Street station has had the first section of precast columns installed.  At Paddington station, the columns and rafters are being installed for the roof, and bridge to the pedestrian area is now under construction. Site engineers, surveyors, and project managers are all needed to ensure smooth completion of the stations. Behind the scenes, commercial claims and dispute managers are also required. We also have a number of quantity surveyor positions on the Crossrail project with a number of stakeholders, contractors, subcontractors and consultants.
