Commercial Opportunities in UK Construction – Regional Update

Posted by Adam Cadwaladr on Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Our UK office has excellent Quantity Surveying and Estimating jobs at various levels all over the UK; particularly in London, the South East, Midlands & East Anglia.  Below I break down what is needed in the various regions…take a look and see if one of these is the right fit for you.

Midlands & East Anglia

Birmingham

I am currently on the lookout for rail experienced Quantity Surveyors and Estimators in Birmingham. There are rail frameworks which we have jobs on for larger consultancies, as well as a highly prestigious rail project in its early stages. I am looking for qualified individuals with rail experience, who want to work on exciting schemes either on a framework or a one off big project.

I am seeking people from the Assistant level up to the senior level of Quantity Surveyor and Estimator to work in these rail sector opportunities.

Nottingham

I am seeking a Quantity Surveyor and Senior Quantity Surveyor to work for a fantastic consultancy in Nottingham, on building sector projects. I am looking for people with a consultancy background as a preference, though if you show transferable skills than a contracting background will also be sought after (i.e. on route to RICS Membership and pre-contract experience). Projects will be varied in the built environment so an aptitude to learn new areas of construction will be important, along with an enthusiasm to do so and help develop an already established business in the region.

Cambridge

I am seeking a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor for a national construction consultancy in Cambridge. The consultancy have recently opened a new office in Cambridge, which has increased in numbers since opening and requires more staff to support this continued growth. Due to the nature of the newly opened office, progression opportunities are fantastic within should you join this company in the near future, and progress into more senior roles with them. The office also has capacity to take on staff in other areas as a multi-disciplinary consultancy, such as a Senior M&E Manager and a Graduate Quantity Surveyor.

London

Quantity Surveying Roles

There is still an ongoing need for Quantity Surveyors at all level for consultancies in London. This is in both the buildings and infrastructure sector, for larger and smaller firms alike. Despite the shortage, consultancy companies remain quite strict on offers, and seek high quality candidates that are qualified and experienced in the relevant areas, that have good continuity of employment, and client facing personalities. Chartered Members of the RICS are highly sought after, or on route to achieve is a large bonus as well. I tend to find that Main Contracting Quantity Surveyors with infrastructure and civil engineering experience seem to be able to transfer to a consultancy organisation in this same sector. In the built environment, the transfer from working for a contractor to a consultancy seems to be slightly rarer, with many employers believing the transfer isn’t quite as do-able.

Estimating Roles

I am seeking rail estimators at all levels to work in central London. These are roles with great longevity on durable contracts for a variety of clients in this sector. Rail experience is key for those in more senior roles, and Quantity Surveyors with rail experience will be considered should they want to transfer into as Estimating role.

Claims & Expert Witness Sector Roles

I recruit nationwide in the construction disputes market, but London remains the hot bed for this market, though not exclusive. I am seeking Quantity Surveyors and Planners who want to specialise in disputes, as well as those staff who have solid construction disputes experience under their belt to work for either a Claims or Expert Witness consultancy in central London. Quantity Surveyors will ideally be chartered (MRICS), however I have one Claims QS role in particular where RICS Membership isn’t necessary for applications, just solid experience on building projects.

South East

Farnham & Reading

The roles I have in other areas of the South East are mainly in Reading in Berkshire, and Farnham in Hampshire. I require Quantity Surveyors with solid NEC contract experience to work in the infrastructure sectors in both locations. I require a Senior Quantity Surveyor to work in Farnham in a variety of sectors, as well as Quantity Surveyors at all levels to work in Reading in the utilities sector. I am also seeking Estimators who want to work in Reading in the utilities sector on a major programme of works over a few years.

Candidates with either a Main Contracting or Consultancy background are both considered for roles in these locations.

Summary

If you are a Quantity Surveyor (or even planner interested in construction disputes), please search our jobs or simply submit your CV. We will be in touch if we can help you find something that suits.  Meanwhile please do be in touch if you would like some advice on career progression.
