Canada Construction Projects – Updates and New Developments

There are always new updates in the world of construction, with Canada seeing many exciting new developments and updates currently. Specifically, Ontario and British Columbia are consistently seeing more and more demand for a range of construction jobs. The construction industry is continuing to grow across Canada, with projects continuing to rise in value -often exceeding original cost estimates. Here’s a roundup of some of the top projects in 2021.

Burnaby Hospital Redevelopment

One of the current largest and highest value projects, the Burnaby Hospital Redevelopment in British Columbia is currently underway. The CAD$1.1m, 314-bed hospital is currently in Phase 1 of construction. The 2 Phased projects will see the expansion, renovation, and eventual completion of two new towers. Whilst Phase 1 Construction aims to be completed by 2027, Phase 2 will run from 2025-2027.

Fleetwood Reservoir and Water Main

This project in Surrey, British Columbia, is being carried out by Metro Vancouver and aims to build a new water main plant and underground reservoir. The project aims to continue delivering clean and safe drinking water to communities in the area. Construction work has already begun and aims to be finished by 2024.

Terrace Mills Memorial Hospital

Construction on this 78-bed hospital in currently underway, with an expected end date being in 2025. The facility will be more than twice the size of the current building, with the emergency department doubling its treatment spaces. The CAD$622.6m project will also double as a training site for medical students partaking in the Northern Medical Program, in BC.

Spadina-Sussex High Rise Student Residence

After reaching an agreement with the local community, the University of Toronto has been granted to ability to build a new 23-storey high rise. The project, which has commenced construction, will house 511 students, and provide townhouses for faculty. The residence will be completed by 2024, according to the developer, the Daniels Corporation.

Ontario Line Transit Expansion

The CAD$11.2b project is being carried out by Metrolinx, with an original end date of 2027. However, this has now been revised to 2030. As of September 2021, Metrolinx have been releasing their Draft Early Works Reports for public feedback, alongside their ongoing environmental impact assessments.

Union Park

Headed by Oxford Properties, the Union Park project is the largest mixed-use development in Toronto’s history. Consisting of four towers and covering 4.3 million square feet, the development includes residential rental units, office space, and a 3-acre urban park. The project is currently in consultation with Heritage and Planning committees, with an aim to finish all three phases by 2027.
