Last month we looked at company culture and how to assess it, this month we look at how to find the right balance between work and your personal life, which is always a balancing act.
Understanding company culture early on in the recruitment process is the first step in navigating work-life balance in your profession. Companies with a strong focus on employee well-being and flexible hybrid work arrangements are more likely to foster a healthy work-life balance.
Setting boundaries is key to maintaining a healthy work-life balance, but it takes discipline and organisation to achieve. Here’s some example rules you can make for yourself:
- Try to close down your computer at a reasonable time each day
- Make time during the day for breaks and walks if possible
- Don’t skip lunch, no-one functions well on an empty stomach and it will recharge you, so you’ll get back to your job better able to tackle any difficult task
- Schedule, plan and book time off - review the holiday allowance a company offers, as it can differ massively from one company to another
- Allocate specific time for leisure activities, exercise, and socialising and diarise them
Achieving the right balance between work and living an enjoyable life is a continuous journey that requires regular self-assessment. Identify areas that need improvement, and make the necessary adjustments. Remember that a healthy work-life balance not only benefits your overall well-being but also enhances your productivity and effectiveness in the workplace.
In conclusion, company culture can play a pivotal role in shaping work-life balance, but individuals also have the power to influence this delicate equilibrium. By setting boundaries, creating personal rules, and continuously assessing your work-life balance, you can pave the way for a more fulfilling and enjoyable life both inside and outside of work.
