An opportunity has arisen for an Intermediate Construction Estimator to join a well-established and expanding construction project delivery and engineering consultancy in Vancouver, British Columbia. This role offers exposure to some of Canada’s most complex and high-value civil infrastructure schemes.

This Intermediate Construction Estimator position will suit a motivated professional with existing estimating experience who is keen to develop quickly, take on increasing responsibility and build a long-term career within a respected consultancy environment. Canadian Permanent Residency, Citizenship or a transferable Canadian work permit is preferred but not mandatory.

Project Details

In this role, the Intermediate Construction Estimator will support senior team members on major infrastructure projects while also taking ownership of estimating tasks on smaller schemes. Projects typically include highways, bridges, rail, transit and transportation infrastructure, with values ranging from approximately $20 million through to multi-billion-dollar programmes.

You will work as part of a collaborative estimating team, providing cost advice and estimating input to a range of internal business units. The position offers a hybrid working arrangement, combining home working with attendance at the downtown Vancouver office for approximately two to four days per week.

This role provides hands-on involvement across the full estimating lifecycle, including early-stage cost planning, tender pricing and risk assessment, supporting projects from concept through to construction across British Columbia and wider Canada.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Intermediate Construction Estimator role will include the following responsibilities, with structured training and development provided where required:

• Preparing detailed construction cost estimates using labour, plant and materials data, supported by construction methodology and programme logic
• Assisting clients with project budgeting and, over time, supporting the development and management of cost control systems
• Working closely with designers, planners and technical specialists as part of integrated project teams
• Contributing to commercial management activities across live projects
• Engaging directly with clients and project stakeholders
• Identifying, analysing and pricing construction and project risks for inclusion in project budgets
• Producing estimates from drawings at various design stages, from early concept through to IFC, using practical construction knowledge
• Reviewing tender documentation, geotechnical reports and technical drawings to forecast construction durations and establish realistic budgets
• Using industry-standard estimating software such as HSS, HeavyBid, Bid2Win or similar platforms
• Managing workload independently while contributing effectively within a team environment

Desired Skills and Experience

Suitable candidates are likely to demonstrate the following experience and attributes:

• Typically between 3 and 10 years of construction estimating experience, although applications are assessed on overall merit
• Background in civil infrastructure, transportation, rail, trackwork or electrical systems projects, or transferable experience from power, oil and gas or major building projects
• Experience gained within a construction contracting environment is preferred, particularly on projects valued from $20 million to $200 million and above
• Cost consultancy or PQS estimating experience is also of interest where strong buildability knowledge is demonstrated
• Proven experience advising on project budgets and supporting cost control systems
• Prior experience working on Canadian infrastructure, building or rail projects is advantageous, though high-quality international experience will also be considered
• Exposure to commercial management responsibilities
• Confident client-facing skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally
• Strong team-working ability combined with the confidence to self-manage day-to-day tasks
• Demonstrable capability in identifying, managing and evaluating project risks
• Hands-on experience with recognised construction estimating software
• A proactive, analytical approach and a genuine interest in delivering accurate, robust cost estimates

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

A recognised qualification in construction, engineering or a related discipline is highly desirable. However, practical construction estimating and commercial experience will be prioritised.

Recent or current estimating experience within the Vancouver or wider British Columbia or the Canadian construction market, particularly on civil infrastructure projects or large projects, is highly desirable.
