A Project Manager is needed to join an international contractor working on a number of building projects in Uganda, Africa.

Ideal candidates will be experienced building Project Managers and will have had previous experience of working in remote locations such as in rural Uganda or other parts of remote Africa. Construction Project Management experience within the building sector, ideally within agricultural storage facility construction is highly desirable, as is extensive experience of working in association with project stakeholders and local rural communities living around a project.

There will be extensive travel required across Uganda and many locations will be remote, with the expectation that basic accommodation and camp facilities will be accepted as the norm.

Project Details

A construction project in Uganda to build and put into service a large number of processing and food storage facilities.  The project, worth about €135m is being built by an international contractor and has international funding.

The scope of works will include ground preparations, civil works, concrete foundations and basic buildings. A variety of different types and sizes of facilities will be built including grain aggregation centres, dryers, processing plants, silos etc and will be handed over by the Ministry of Agriculture once competed.

Much of the project will be delivered by partners and sub-contractors so there will be extensive interfacing with other parties, including landowners, communities, the Ministry and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities and Duties

As the construction Project Manager responsible for all building and civil elements of construction works, you will be required to:

  • Plan, organise, mobilise and manage several construction sites simultaneously
  • Prepare comprehensive progress reports, statements and payment certificates as specified
  • Set up construction programmes including S-curves, projected cash-flows and resource-forecasts including labour

Operational Efficiency

  • Ensure the health and safety of all operations including as related to employees, sub-contractors and the general public
  • Central / multiple sites: Overall management of the contract including compliance, enforcement, notifications etc
  • Planning of the job, in particular mobilization of resources (HR, material, equipment, etc)
  • Identify and manage specific contractual, regulatory and technical constraints before start-up
  • Management of subcontractors involved, including selection and control
  • Attend site meetings e.g. critical meetings or when requested by the client
  • Control the quality of work against the specifications and the method statements
  • Control work progress and obtain client certification
  • Follow the payments / credit limits
  • Control the budget and program, analyze deviations and propose solutions
  • Ensure job is executed in line with budget
  • Liaise with the client, affected stakeholders and the Engineer, sub-contractors and suppliers
  • Ensure optimum use of plant and equipment

Commercial Responsibilities

  • To handle commercial aspects in relation to the Project
  • To ensure that adequate records are kept for the preparation of the monthly accounts
  • Assume responsibility to get the work certified from Engineer / Employer
  • Daily costs control to ensure contracts are carried out within tender budget
  • Negotiate changes to the scope of work with the client and sub-contractors
  • To conduct site visits and inspections

Leadership & Management Responsibilities

  • Strategic thinking, to motivate Team, lead by example, abide by company integrity policies, continuous improvement, planning & organising, learning orientation.
  • Decisions required in relation to the project from SHE&Q to Operational decisions
  • To manage, delegate and supervise plant, labour, resources and key personnel to ensure that on-going projects are carried out within the client’s specification and completed within time and budgets

Compliance – Anti Bribery Commitment Responsibilities

  • Read, understand, adhere to and comply with the information contained within the Rules of Conduct, and Code of Ethics, and with any training or other anti-bribery and corruption information given by the Management
  • Report any witnessed non-compliance or breach of these policies

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience in a Project Management role in Africa, ideally Uganda, on a building construction or processing and food storage facility construction project would be ideal
  • Experience of working in developing countries is very strongly desired
  • Previous experience gained from within the Agricultural construction sector in a construction site based Project Management role is desirable
  • Experience in dealing with government approvals representatives in a comparable context is desirable
  • Experience with civil works, concrete structures, steel structures and foundations
  • Experience with FIDIC type contracts and contract management
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel, MS Project (or Primavera) and Word
  • Familiarity and preferably experience with estimating software like Causeway or CCS

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • A Degree or equivalent in Engineering is preferred
