A rare opportunity for a highly experienced Project Controls Director to be based in Hamilton, Ontario and to lead all project control activities on a major $1.5 billion rail infrastructure project likely to be awarded shortly.

This senior leadership role is ideal for a project controls professional with extensive civil engineering and rail experience who is seeking a new long-term career challenge within Canada’s infrastructure sector.

Project Details

This Project Controls Director job role, once the project is awarded, will be based on a large-scale rail infrastructure scheme to be constructed between Hamilton and Toronto, and forms part of a significant regional investment in transportation.

The scope of the Project Controls Director job role will be to oversee planning, cost management, risk, and performance control for a project currently valued at approximately CAD$1.5 billion. The role will be embedded within an alliance-style delivery environment promoting collaboration and transparency between the client, contractor, and consultant partners.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Project Controls Director will lead a multi-disciplinary project controls team and take overall accountability for cost, schedule, and risk management.

Duties will include:

  • Providing strategic leadership to establish and manage the full suite of project controls processes from award through completion.
  • Developing and maintaining integrated cost and schedule baselines, forecasts, and performance metrics.
  • Overseeing earned value analysis, trend management, and risk reporting.
  • Leading a team of cost engineers, planners, and analysts to ensure best practice in project delivery.
  • Preparing and presenting project performance reports to senior management and alliance partners.
  • Driving collaboration and alignment between commercial, engineering, and construction delivery functions.
  • Ensuring consistent application of alliancing principles to optimise outcomes for all parties.
  • Supporting strategic decision-making by providing accurate and timely project data.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience on major civil engineering or rail infrastructure projects, ideally gained in Canada, although strong international experience is also acceptable
  • At least 10 years experience in a senior project controls or management position ideally gained in Canada, although strong international experience is also acceptable
  • Proven experience working within an alliance or collaborative contracting model, ideally in Canada, but internationally is also acceptable as long as there is also local Canadian experience
  • Strong knowledge of cost control, planning, scheduling, risk management, and earned value techniques.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Experience working on complex, multi-stakeholder construction projects, ideally within the Canadian or international infrastructure sector.

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Degree in engineering, construction management, or a related discipline.
  • PMP certification preferred.
  • Additional professional project controls or cost management qualifications are advantageous.
