Summary of Contracts Manager Job Vacancy - South Africa

A Contracts Manager is required to work for a leading construction consultancy operating as the strategic execution partner to the client on the World's largest dry-cooled coal-powered power station in the World. The site is based in a South African town called Lephalale which is a remote town close to the North of the country.

Responsibilities and Duties

The role requires knowledge and understanding of all aspects of Contract Management having gained experience working within contractor’s or employer’s organisation to include but not limited to an understanding of contracts, risk, health and safety, progress planning, partnering and cost reporting methodologies.

The primary responsibility of the role is to manage the administration of a works packages in connection with all commercial, contractual and performance matters relating to a specific element(s) of the Power Station utilizing the FIDIC form of Contract. 

  • Fulfill the role of the package engineers representative as defined within the contract.
  • Monitor as defined within the contract the contractors health and safety performance against the contracts specific requirements.
  • Monitor as defined within the contract contractors quality performance against the contracts specific requirements.
  • Monitor as defined within the contract contractors progress against the projects defined targets.
  • Ensure as defined within the contract commercial processes and procedures are adhered to
  • Manage the set commercial package objectives and cascade to the team.
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities and manage them through to conclusion to minimise Employer’s liability
  • Develop and encourage direct staff to take responsibility for sections of the project.
  • Develop a team spirit with team members

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Significant Contract Management experience; with at least 10 years at a leadership level in a contracting company or as an employer’s Resident Engineer;
  • Experience in a managing major contracts
  • Good understanding of the FIDIC contract conditions
  • Technical knowledgeable in commercial, contract and risk management
  • Exposure to large engineering and construction projects preferably in the Power or major Infrastructure Sector.
  • Outstanding communication, leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop proactive and professional working relationships within an integrated team.
  • Ability to resolve problems independently and operate efficiently under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to drive change through the organization and proven track record of leading multi-discipline commercial teams

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • A Degree (or similar equivalent) in relevant related subject is essential
  • Membership to a Professional body such as the RICS is desired

Additional Benefits Package and Incentives

The salary advertised is subject to South African tax at circa 40%. On top of the salary, candidates can expect the company to provide them with accommodation near to the site, a car and private medical cover. Expatriate staff will be eligible for annual flights to their country of origin.
