Commercial Manager
An exciting Head Office based role with one of the World's most renowned main contractors exists for a Commercial Manager. The successful candidate will fill a key role within the business, reporting directly to the International Commercial Director. Working closely with the Director, you will support all of the company's International projects.
This is an exciting role and would suit a strong Commercial Manager, potentially even a strong Senior Quantity Surveyor who would like to get into a more varied, strategic role within a major International contractor.
Project Details
This is a Head Office based role, so you will not be employed on a specific project. Instead you will work across all of the company's International projects. You may be assigned specific projects to manage throughout your time with the business.
As a business the hiring company is a multi discipline main contractor, working on major projects around the World. They are a truly global contractor, with projects in all corners of the globe.
International travel will be required in this role. Estimated at the rate of 2 weeks every 2 months as a rough guide.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Commercial Manager will report to the International Commercial Director and work closely with them to oversee all of the company's international projects. You will provide support and direction where needed to the site based Commercial Managers and their projects.
This is a key position within the business and the role comes with a varied set of responsibilities, including:
Strategy and Management
- Advise and report regularly to the Global Commercial Manager and the board on contractual and legal matters
Commercial and QS Support
- Explore opportunities to maximise revenue and reduce cost
- Review Management reports and monitor project cash management
- Advise and support with project correspondence
- Identify and investigate losses
- Monitor the overall cash position
- Support the dispute resolution process
Project
- Advice on project budget
- Review monthly cost reports
- Ensure risk registers, variation trackers and extension of time tracker sheets are reviewed and updated monthly and included within monthly reports
- Support to the initiation and setting up of projects
Tender
- Tender review/enquiries/clarifications
- Advise bonds, guarantee wordings and insurance issues
- Prepare, negotiate JV and consortium agreements
- Post tender pre contract negotiations
- Prepare Tender submission cashflow
Contract Administration
- Advise on contractual matters and contractual approach with client
- Identify contract grounds for claim and determine claim strategy
- Review notices and contractual correspondence
- Prepare claim entitlements and follow negotiations
- Advise on dispute avoidance and resolution
Desired Skills and Experience
- A strong Senior Quantity Surveyor / Commercial Manager who can demonstrate real ability in making an impact on projects / divisions they have managed
- Exposure to a range of projects would be advantageous as the hiring company are a multi disciplined main contractor with a varied project portfolio
- Knowledge and experience of a range of familiar contracts such as JCT, FIDIC, NEC would be advantageous
- Ability to analyse commercial reports and identify potential issues and suggest improvements
- Some experience of being involved in high level claims process is advantageous. However, we are not looking for a claims specialist. The commercial side of this role will be more prominent and more important to the business.
- Strong Leader who can earn the respect of site based Commercial Managers within the business and work cooperatively with them to achieve best results.
- Ability to communicate well with Directors
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- Must be Degree qualified in a relevant subject such as Civil Engineering or Quantity Surveying
- Membership of a relevant professional body would be an advantage but is not essential
