This claims consultant job is perfect role for a quantity surveyor looking to make the transition into a specialist claims and disputes consultancy in the Midlands area.

You will work from the client’s Birmingham, West Midlands office and need to be able and willing to commute to this office at least 2 days per week. However, assignments and projects will cover the East and West Midlands area, therefore candidates in Leicester, Nottingham, Coventry and Derby will all be considered.

The hiring company is a large, blue chip consultancy with offices in the UK and Internationally. You will join a specialist claims and disputes division of this business, which is experiencing rapid growth at present.

You will join a dedicated team of experts advising clients on strategic procurement, claims management and dispute resolution.

Project Details

The specialist division of this leading blue-chip consultancy is home to a growing number of dedicated expert staff providing high level advisory services to clients relating to strategic procurement, claims management and dispute resolution techniques.

Your role will see you situated within the specialist construction claims team, which works on construction claims arising across the UK and potentially international construction projects.

The portfolio of claims and related dispute work undertaken include a range of civil and building projects located in the UK as well as a range of expert service assignments based in a range of international locations.

Building construction claim and dispute resolution work is often on major retail and health related projects.

Civil engineering construction claims work is often focused on major rail construction projects and also infrastructure construction and upgrade work for roads and utilities/water projects.

Responsibilities and Duties

This is a relatively junior role within this team; therefore, candidates are not expected to be the finished article in terms of experience. However, having a good foundation of experience as a Quantity Surveyor managing projects / packages of work through their full lifecycle and having some exposure to claims related duties is desired.

The Claims Consultant job duties include:

  • Joining a construction claims team or running a construction claims team working on a particular client claims assignment
  • Presenting research findings orally and in written form to colleagues, lawyers and senior client representatives with natural gravitas
  • Offering advice on a range of national and international construction contract forms to clients and the process and procedures relating to them that are available to pursue or rebut a claim
  • Applying robust and methodical analytical skills to all aspects of the construction claims work, and adopting a flexible and adaptable approach to problems encountered and to client requests
  • Showing the ability to work alone without supervision to a high standard, but also able to integrate and support dispute team members and collaborate to complete complex tasks under tight time deadlines
  • Ability to provide claims consultancy advice on live contracts and projects in distress to a high professional standard

Desired Skills and Experience

Previous Claims Experience required includes:

  • Strong and transferrable experience of working as a contractor's Project Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor is preferred, with particular reference to having worked on claims matters arising as a result of having managed a significantly sized contract from commencement to final account, and with responsibility for managing the claims preparation process throughout the duration and completion of contracted works.
  • Experience of working in or with / in association with a construction claims team or running a construction claims team working on a particular client claims assignment
  • Able to offer advice on a range of national and international construction contract forms to clients and the process and procedures relating to them that are available to pursue or rebut a claim
  • Experience of applying robust and methodical analytical skills, while adopting a flexible and adaptable approach to problems and client requests
  • Experience and ability to work alone without supervision to a high standard, and to collaborate to complete complex tasks under tight time deadlines
  • Ability to provide claims consultancy advice on live contracts and projects in distress to a high professional standard

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • A Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or Cost Management degree is essential.
  • Achieved or studying towards a professional membership such as the RICS OR a higher qualification such as a Construction Law MSc, LLM, PgDip or similar would be advantageous.
