A senior civil engineering infrastructure Project Manager job in Vancouver, BC to join a leading multi-disciplinary civil engineering infrastructure and project management consultancy.  Current construction projects include a variety of heavy civils work across Vancouver and British Columbia including marine, port, tunnel, road, bridge, and a variety of transit and rail projects.  The company portfolio of civil engineering and rail projects are at a variety of stages of pre-construction development and are also at live on site construction stage also. 

Scope of work to be undertaken includes design development and costing, and live site-based construction management and project management often right from RPF stage. 
The successful candidate will be employed to lead the management of one or more civil engineering and infrastructure projects often from concept to delivery and will be responsible for the management of front-end processes and decision making on a day-to-day basis.  The civil engineering and transit projects that are undertaken are large long term projects and include keynote large provincial transit rail and infrastructure expansion projects.

Client side Project Managers considering joining this attractive employer will need to have the capability and mindset to be able to work on multiple large projects concurrently. Responsibilities and Duties

The Senior Project Management job role based in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada, is a hands-on management position that will require capability and experience to:

  • Act as a proactive Client Project Manager to provide client project delivery services, and to manage and motivate the broader delivery team to deliver optimal outcomes
  • Understand and fully perform the role of client engineer project manager to achieve successful project delivery
  • Be able to successfully coordinate multidisciplinary teams including multiple engineering consultants, environmental, construction, communications, legal, and other project participants
  • Be able to lead from the front with a strong work ethic and an analytical and decision-making approach and mindset
  • Able to take responsibility for questioning and interrogating situations to ensure the best possible project delivery performance will be achieved from civil engineering contractors and subcontractors and all project stakeholders
  • Take responsibility for team leading and managing others - both internal and external to the organisation that is engaged in project delivery
  • Able to proactively engage stakeholders early to develop and build confidence and trust in the processes that will ensure success
  • Be willing and able to explain and justify decisions made and also the decision-making process undertaken to the client and senior stakeholders in the project
  • Understand 'buildability' issues and have experience in dealing with constructability analysis, risk management and design management and interface matters.
  • Able to review design solutions to ensure optimisation from a constructability viewpoint.
  • Be able to work as a part of a team, to take multiple concurrent projects through the required design stages of Feasibility, Business Case Preparation, Preliminary Design, Schematic Design, Design Development to Design Completion, the Project Procurement Phase to Go Live and on site construction Project Delivery.
  • Be able to Project Manage a major infrastructure project from Request for Proposal (RFP) stage right through to live construction, and efficiently manage and supervise contractors work output time and quality on site
  • Able to demonstrate an intimate knowledge and understanding of the design, scope and project contract documents relating to all infrastructure projects within remit
  • Able to oversee and contribute to the management of project planning, budget control, risk and procurement matters, including reviewing of technical proposals and financial close considerations
  • Able to develop and manage project contracting strategies, including packaging of work to optimise future performance
  • Fully understand the design and procurement stage from previous owners engineer experience, and be able to project manage this key stage into and right through the site construction phase
  • Take responsibility for client delivery and client interface management with other parties and stakeholders
  • Be able to identify and engage with business development opportunities with existing and new clients. Demonstrate willingness and ability to spot opportunities to provide addtional services to existing clients and to engage in dialogue with new potential clients with a view to providing engineering and project management services to them
  • Be interested to proactively investigate ways to develop and grow a Client Project Management service within the business and contribute to its growth in revenue and profitability as a business unit
  • Show an interest and ability to nurture and train junior staff (whether direct reports or not) and grow a company culture of high-quality work and professional integrity

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Suitable Senior Project Manager candidates must have extensive experience of complex full client management processes
  • Senior Project Manager job candidates should demonstrate previous experience of having management responsibility for a client delivery team on a major infrastructure or civil engineering project, preferably in Canada
  • Previous construction project management experience on heavy civil engineering infrastructure or civil engineering projects of CAD$50m+ in value is preferred
  • Previous project management and engineering experience of roads, highways, interchanges, bridges, transit, railways, heavy civils, ports, marine works, and civils elements of mining and power projects would be most relevant
  • It is anticipated that suitable candidates will have c10-15 years of experience of working on heavy civil engineering projects mostly in a client project management capacity although candidates with suitable Project Management process/procedure experience that enables them to perform the role will also be considered. Quality and breadth/depth of experience will be assessed on merit.
  • Senior Project Manager job applicants will need to have worked for a civil engineering consulting engineer or construction project management consultancy in a Client Project Management capacity, or similar, for a significant period to have gained the appropriate hands-on experience and management experience to be fully experienced and ready to perform this Senior Project Manager job role
  • Senior Project Managers must be fully experienced in performing client-side project management processes and responsibilities and be able to innovate and add value to the construction process
  • Some early career civil engineering experience with a civil engineering contractor would be advantageous to assist with an understanding of real-life site buildability issues and to be able to understand and act to mitigate potential engineer-contractor interface issues
  • Priority will be given to suitable candidates that are Canadian citizens or have the right to work in Canada, although anyone with suitable experience is welcome to apply.

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • A degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or Engineering is highly desirable
  • PEng Chartered Engineer status is also highly desirable - registration in good standing as an engineer in British Columbia, Canada is preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Project and specialist construction project management software is required
  • Priority will be given to suitable candidates that are Canadian citizens or have the right to work in Canada, although anyone with suitable experience is welcome to apply.
